Tree planted to commemorate Stephen Lawrence Day

26th April 2019

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, has joined Gwent Police officers, staff and community representatives to mark the first national Stephen Lawrence Day.

Stephen Lawrence Day takes place on April 22 and commemorates the teenager from south east London who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993.

The Macpherson Report, which reviewed the way the case was handled by the police, led to major changes in UK policing.

PCC Jeff Cuthbert said: “Stephen Lawrence was an innocent teenager and his brutal death on April 22 1993 sent shockwaves around the world. Race relations in the UK changed forever that day.

“Thankfully policing has come a long way since then. I am proud that here in Gwent we are making serious strides to build community cohesion, and to ensure that our police force and staff are truly representative of the communities they serve.”
