PCC visits Gwent Communities

14th May 2021

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, is visiting communities across the region following his re-election on Sunday 9 May.

Mr Cuthbert has visited towns including Blackwood, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Ebbw Vale, Newport, Pontypool and Tredegar to speak with residents and local businesses about the issues that most mattered to them. More visits to all of Gwent’s counties are planned for the coming weeks.

He also took the opportunity to promote Gwent Police’s new We Don’t Buy Crime initiative, which focusses on tackling acquisitive crime such as burglary and theft.

Mr Cuthbert said: “I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Gwent as Police and Crime Commissioner for another term and feel it is important to get out into the community to talk to people about what really matters to them.

“So far I have been pleased that all of the residents and businesses I have spoken to have a positive relationship with their local police force. Understandably there is some concern about a rise in crime and antisocial behaviour as lockdown measures ease. Gwent Police are preparing for this with extra patrols in key areas and are liaising closely with businesses that may be affected.

“Gwent Police’s newly formed We Don’t Buy Crime Team is also available to provide proactive crime prevention and target hardening advice to communities to help them avoid becoming targets for crime, and are ready to react quickly when a burglary does take place to help reduce the risk for surrounding properties.

“Crime prevention is the one of the priorities in my Police and Crime Plan and, with the police working in partnership with residents and businesses to address vulnerabilities and tackle hotspot areas, I have no doubt that we will create a safer Gwent for all.”
