Domestic abuse convictions rise

12th September 2019

Domestic abuse convictions in Wales have risen according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

In Gwent the percentage of charges that result in conviction is 85.2 per cent compared to the lower national rate of 77.1 per cent.

Police and Crime Commissioner Jeff Cuthbert said: “Supporting the most vulnerable people in our communities is at the heart of my Police and Crime Plan.

“Gwent Police have made significant efforts to improve domestic abuse investigations. Better training, and better evidence gathering from body worn cameras and digital devices have contributed to a greater number of arrests.

“They have also greatly improved the support available to victims of domestic abuse.

“Of course there is more work to be done but there figures are extremely positive and I would like to congratulate Gwent Police for the improvements that they have made in this area.”
