Volunteer Independent Custody Visitors Wanted

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, is looking for members of the public to join his Independent Custody Visiting scheme

Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) are specially trained volunteers who make unannounced visits to police custody units to check on the welfare of detainees and the facilities in which they are held.

Successful candidates will join a team of volunteers playing a vital role in visiting police stations and police cells throughout the Gwent Force area.

Urging volunteers to come forward, Mr Cuthbert said, “My Independent Custody Visitors are a key resource in helping me to monitor the performance and accountability of Gwent Police.

“It is important that those detained, and the police officers working in custody units, have someone looking after their rights.

“ICVs provide the independent oversight of what can be a high pressured environment, ensuring that police custody is safe and dignified for all.”

As PCC, Mr Cuthbert has a statutory responsibility to implement an Independent Custody Scheme and monitor its work through regular engagement with his volunteers. Any issues arising are discussed during specific meetings with ICVs and Gwent Police.

Applications are now open and will close at 5pm on Wednesday, 10th July 2019.
