Search begins for new Chief Constable of Gwent Police

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, has launched his search for a new Chief Constable to lead Gwent Police.

The successful candidate will lead a team of 2,135 police officers and staff, and oversee the delivery of the PCC’s Police and Crime plan.

They will succeed Chief Constable Julian Williams who steps down in June after 30 years’ service, including two years at the helm of Gwent Police.

Jeff Cuthbert said: “As Police and Crime Commissioner it is my responsibility to appoint a new Chief Constable to lead Gwent Police.

“Gwent covers an area comprising a major city and busy towns, to rural countryside and smaller valleys communities, which all present their own unique challenges for policing.

“Like all police forces, Gwent Police also face future financial challenges.

“The service has had to make more than £50million in savings since 2008 and, at the same time, the increase in demand in areas such as child sexual exploitation, modern day slavery and cybercrime are stretching our officers and staff like never before.

“Therefore I am looking for a strong, talented leader that is committed to delivering community focussed policing and will ensure that Gwent remains one of the safest places to live, work and visit in the UK.”

The closing date for applications is 22nd May 2019.

Applicants are required to meet the minimum eligibility criteria as outlined within the College of Police Guidance for Appointing Chief Officers.
