Rhymney Valley Pupils Broadcast Live Across the Airwaves

White Rose Primary school have hit the airwaves for the final time to celebrate their ‘end of show’ radio show.

Pupils from year 5 broadcast their final show live from the school in front of a variety of guests including parents, teachers and governors.

The project, which was part of the school’s ‘Lead Creative Schools Scheme’ and supported by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent (OPCC), saw the group produce, design and broadcast eight radio shows across the internet.

One of those in the audience at the final show was head teacher Kathryn Thompson, who was thrilled to see how far the children had progressed in eight weeks.

“We wanted to run a project which saw the young people become engaged with their local community,” she said.

“I’ve seen a remarkable difference in so many of the children involved, including an increase in their resilience, problem solving, creativity and confidence.”

Also attending was year five and six teacher, Dafydd Carter, who supported the children throughout the project. Speaking after the broadcast, Dafydd praised those involved for their hard work and commitment: “The children have loved using this new technology, becoming fully engaged in the programme of work.

“Now we have the equipment in the school, we can continue to implement this into our curriculum whilst working even more closely with local community groups and public services.”

The school received a grant of £4,500 from the OPCC’s Partnership Fund in 2017, which was used towards purchasing the radio station equipment.

On granting the funding, Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent Jeff Cuthbert said: “I am delighted to see so many young children getting involved in this initiative, building relationships, not just with each other, but with their local communities.

“It has been a pleasure to listen to the children over the last eight weeks. I look forward to hearing plenty more from them in the future.”
