Police and Crime Commissioner marks Stephen Lawrence Day

22nd April 2020

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, has spoken to mark the second annual Stephen Lawrence Day.

Stephen Lawrence Day takes place on April 22 and commemorates the teenager from south east London who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993.

The Macpherson Report, which reviewed the way the case was handled by the police, led to major changes in UK policing.

PCC Jeff Cuthbert said: “Stephen Lawrence was an innocent teenager and his brutal death on April 22 1993 sent shockwaves around the world.

“The way in which his case was handled by the Metropolitan Police at that time was appalling. The Macpherson Report uncovered a network of corruption that led to major changes in policing throughout the UK.

“Thankfully, because of Stephen, policing and other public services have come a long way since then. I am proud that here in Gwent we are making serious strides in increasing community cohesion, and ensuring that our police force and staff are representative of the communities they serve.”
