PCC Responds to Latest Knife Crime Coverage

7th October 2019

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert has responded to the latest press coverage around knife crime figures in the UK.

An analysis of police crime figures by the BBC has suggested that that the rate of knife attacks in some regional towns and cities is higher than in many London boroughs.

Having reviewed the coverage, Mr Cuthbert said, “You may have seen reports in the press this morning that knife attacks outside of London are on the increase.

“I want to take this opportunity to reassure the citizens of Gwent that although knife crime is at the forefront of media coverage, rates in Gwent remain some of the lowest in the UK.

“One of my key priorities as PCC is to prevent crime and tackle crimes that present the greatest threat, harm and risk to people.

“I want to stress that Gwent Police are proactively going after all weapons on our streets and have worked hard on campaigns and operations to prevent knifes and firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

“We in Gwent also support ‘Operation Sceptre’, a national campaign which aims to educate people about the dangers associated with knives.

“If you have information on anyone carrying a weapon, please contact Gwent Police via their social media desk, 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
