PCC backs boxing-based project for schools
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd is supporting a school-based boxing project run by St Joseph’s Boxing Gym in Newport.
The club is delivering boxing sessions for secondary school pupils across Newport, with the aim of developing their skills so that they can join boxing classes at the gym. It is also working with the police and probation service to support young offenders, as well as providing sessions for victims of crime.
During the sessions, participants practise boxing skills and work on their fitness, while also learning about discipline, developing a positive mindset and teamwork.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “This project delivers a wide range of benefits, from improving physical fitness and strengthening mental resilience to learning and developing new skills.
“By offering young people the opportunity to try these activities at a time in their lives when we know they are more susceptible to becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour, we are equipping them with the skills they need to make positive, healthier choices about their future.”
The project supports the priorities set out in the Commissioner’s Police, Crime and Justice Plan and is partially funded using money recovered from the proceeds of crime. Community groups can apply to the fund for grants ranging from £1,000 to £50,000 to support local initiatives.
Boxing coach Billy Reynolds said: “With boxing comes a sense of purpose and achievement. It teaches emotional control, discipline and self-restraint. It also provides a healthy outlet for aggression and stress, and can help young people to better manage their feelings and frustrations.
“Training regularly also helps to develop resilience and a strong sense of control, and participants are more likely to avoid harmful coping mechanisms such as alcohol or drugs. But what this project is really about is helping individuals to make healthier choices, develop their confidence and social skills, and ultimately become better versions of themselves.”
