New domestic abuse drop-in service launches in Blaenau Gwent

15th September 2020

A new domestic abuse drop-in service has opened at Ebbw Vale Institute (EVI).

The service includes face-to-face crisis support, available by appointment only, due to COVID restrictions and a helpline for anyone experiencing domestic abuse in Blaenau Gwent. It also hosts a safe and welcoming space for individuals accessing the Horizon sexual violence counselling and independent sexual violence adviser (ISVA) services.

The new service, funded by Comic Relief, has been established due to increased demand for domestic abuse support during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Cyfannol Women’s Aid is a Gwent-wide organisation and staff dealing with calls and ‘drop-ins’ in their Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen offices have seen increases in both the severity of the reported abuse and complexity of individuals’ situations.

Jeff Cuthbert, Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, said:

“I am pleased that residents of Blaenau Gwent have a safe place to receive the help and support they need. The pandemic has exacerbated situations for domestic abuse victims. Lockdown has been hard for many people but even more so for families who are living at the hands of an abuser. We must not tolerate abuse.

“My office supports organisations that help and support victims of domestic violence, and I understand how hard it is to break the cycle of abuse. I urge anyone experiencing abuse emotionally or physically to call the helpline, book an appointment or call the Live Fear Free helpline, or to call 999 if they are in immediate danger.”

Suzanne Dennehy, Blaenau Gwent Area Manager for Cyfannol Women’s Aid, said: “As an organisation, we are constantly adapting our services to meet the needs of adults and children who need support. We’re delighted to now be able to offer drop-in and phone support, in addition to our existing domestic abuse services in Blaenau Gwent, thanks to Comic Relief. EVI offers so much scope for us, in terms of service delivery and increased accessibility, and, as a multi-agency centre, fits with our ethos: Together we are stronger!"
