Celebrating the Windrush Generation

23rd June 2026

Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd has joined the annual celebrations for the Windrush Generation.

The Windrush Generation refers to the African-Caribbean men, women and children who arrived in the UK on HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. They came at a time of labour shortages and were welcomed as part of the country’s efforts to rebuild after the Second World War.

The Commissioner joined elders from the Windrush community and leaders from across Wales at a special event at the Senedd. The event was organised by Race Council Cymru and supported by funding from Wales’s four Police and Crime Commissioners to celebrate the contribution the Windrush Generation has made in Wales.

Jane Mudd said: “Windrush Day is our opportunity to say thank you to those people who left their homes and travelled to help rebuild the country after the war. It is now almost 80 years since HMT Empire Windrush arrived on our shores, and it is important that we continue to remember those men and women who went on to contribute so much to our communities.”
