The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent has approved the Chief Constable's decision to deploy police officers to the British Virgin Islands for 4 weeks from 20th October 2017 to assist in general policing duties during the recovery from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

Section 26 of the Police Act 1996 requires that the Police and Crime Commissioner authorises the travel and attendance overseas of any officer or staff member providing assistance to an internal organisation or any other body which is engaged outside the UK in policing activities.
