Supporting White Ribbon Day
Today, Saturday 25th November 2017, is International White Ribbon Day and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Staff across Gwent Police, with support from partner agencies, have been showing their support for the awareness raising campaign.
This year, specially designed stickers displaying the White Ribbon message have been added to certain Gwent Police vehicles and to those of our partner agencies in South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. A launch event was held at Cardiff Central Fire Station on Friday 24th November where the branded vehicles were unveiled.
Our School Community Police Officers have also been promoting key messages and sharing materials and inputs with pupils and staff about recognising and reporting signs of abuse and seeking early support. The messages have been shared in conjunction with their Anti - Bullying Campaign.
Other events across the Gwent Police area have taken place with officers and staff showing their support.
Assistant Chief Constable Rhiannon Kirk said: “The addition of these messages to our Gwent Police vehicles will hopefully raise awareness and help to spread the message that we support this very worthwhile campaign. The White Ribbon campaign, which launched in the UK in 2004, has gone from strength to strength each year and it is vitally important as a Service we continue to give the campaign the recognition it deserves.
“While many victims of abuse are women it is important to state that these incidents can affect anyone irrespective of their gender, ethnic origin, age or sexual orientation. The White Ribbon campaign is a reminder that everyone has a role to play in recognising and taking a stand against domestic abuse.
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, said: “Domestic abuse is still largely a hidden crime as it often happens behind closed doors. I was pleased to join our emergency services partners yesterday to raise awareness about this issue and highlight that it is not acceptable.
Preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence and working with our partners to provide excellent support for victims is a key priority for us in Gwent. We don’t want people to suffer in silence and I would urge anyone suffering from domestic abuse to report it. I know victims can find it difficult to come forward but it’s vital that they do. I want to reassure them that there is excellent support and advice available for them in Gwent through our Connect Gwent victim’s hub, where we have specially trained officers and support staff on hand to help.”
