Speak up for change

26th November 2025

Each year, at least one in every twelve women and girls in the UK experiences violence or abuse.

Three in five women face sexual harassment, bullying, or verbal abuse in the workplace.

More than 100 women are killed by men every year.

As a society, we must stop making excuses for harmful behaviours and attitudes towards women and girls.

We must speak up.

Ignoring sexism puts women and girls at risk. Behaviours like sexist jokes, catcalling, staring, and inappropriate comments might seem minor, but they matter because they can escalate into abuse and violence.

Many people believe crimes like sexual assault or harassment are rare, extreme events that have nothing to do with their daily lives. But every time we stay silent when something feels wrong, we miss an opportunity to set a better example.

In reality, small everyday actions can make a big difference.

Refusing to laugh at sexist jokes, challenging catcalling, or calling out inappropriate staring helps stop behaviours that can lead to serious violence.

I am proud that the Dragons are speaking up to support women and girls in Gwent, using their influence to address this issue in our society.

They are speaking up for our women and girls. Like the Dragons, we must speak up.

If you have experienced abuse, or are worried about someone you know, please reach out and tell someone.
