Police and Crime Panel to hold confirmation hearing for proposed Chief Constable

26th July 2019

The Police and Crime Panel for Gwent will hold a confirmation hearing on the proposed new Chief Constable for Gwent Police next month.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, is putting Temporary Chief Constable Pam Kelly forward as his preferred candidate, with a recommendation for the panel to approve his selection at a special panel meeting on Monday 12 August.

The approval of the Police and Crime Panel is a requirement under the Police and Social Responsibility Act 2011. The panel’s role is to ensure the selection and appointment process for Chief Constables is conducted openly and fairly.

Pam Kelly, whose substantive post is Deputy Chief Constable, was successful at interview stage for the post of Chief Constable following the recent selection process. This followed the retirement of former Chief Constable Julian Williams at the end of June.

The Police and Crime Panel will meet at Monmouthshire County Council, County Hall, Usk at 10am on Monday 12 August. The meeting will be webcast live and copies of the reports can be viewed at http://gwentpcp.org.uk

Mr Cuthbert will not make any further comment until the Police and Crime Panel concludes the appointment process.
