Police and Crime Commissioner welcomes amendment to Domestic Abuse Bill

1st July 2020

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, has welcomed an amendment to the Domestic Abuse Bill that recognises children within the statutory definition of domestic abuse.

Jeff Cuthbert said: “We know that growing up in an abusive household can cause lasting damage to a child; greatly affecting their life chances and life outcomes.

“Over the last year in Gwent alone more than 5000 children were in households where a police report was made regarding domestic abuse.

“Children growing up in these conditions are just as much victims as the person being directly abused, and I welcome this amendment which formally recognises this within the law.
