PCC supports Gwent Police initiative to keep runners safe
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd joined members of Newport’s running community to relaunch Gwent Police’s safer running scheme for the winter.
Gwent Police officers are working with Welsh Athletics to offer advice and guidance to women and girls on how to look after their personal safety while running, particularly during the darker winter months.
Officers have spoken to runners from clubs across Gwent about practical steps they can take to stay safe and how to report any concerns. Women who experience harassment or threatening behaviour while running are encouraged to contact the police and report it.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “As the winter months draw in and the nights become darker, many women and girls can be put off running in their communities as they feel unsafe.
“This initiative from Gwent Police acknowledges that women and girls are likely to be more vulnerable than men when out running, particularly if they are running alone, and provides simple advice and guidance on staying safe and reporting any issues or concerns.”
Gwent Police’s Top Five Tips for All Runners:
- Keep to well-lit routes and avoid secluded areas
- Wear bright clothing and lights to stay visible
- Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return
- Share your route with someone or run with others
- Always carry your mobile phone
Issues can be reported to Gwent Police via 101, by messaging Gwent Police directly on Facebook, or by reporting online. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
