17th July 2025

Gwent Police officers who attempted to save a man from a burning car were recognised at the 2025 National Police Bravery Awards.

PCs Ryan Blair-Baggs, Robbie Higgins, Abigail Jenkins-Murphy, and Special Constable Mark Lee, were involved in the search for a 63-year-old man reported missing from the Cwmbran area on Friday 10 November 2023. They sustained injuries, including burns, while trying to rescue the man who sadly later died in hospital.

The National Police Bravery Awards, organised by the Police Federation, celebrate extraordinary acts of courage by officers.

Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd said: “This was a tragic case, and my thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who lost his life.

“The officers involved in this case demonstrated extraordinary bravery, selflessly putting their own lives in danger while attempting to save the resident’s life. I would like to thank PC Blair-Baggs, PC Higgins, PC Jenkins-Murphy, and SC Lee on behalf of the people of Gwent for their service, and for all they do every day to keep us safe.”
