Event to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour in Cwmbran Town Centre held

An event to tackle anti-social behaviour in Cwmbran Town centre has been held at Cwmbran fire station.

The evening, hosted by Gwent Police, saw young people associated with anti-social behaviour, and their families, attend to hear about the effects their actions could have on other people in the area and how sport could be a more beneficial alternative.

Speaking at the event was Wales and Newport Dragons prop, Leon Brown. Leon, now a Positive Futures Ambassador, spoke to the young people about his personal experiences growing up in Newport, how he saw his peers down into crime and anti-social behaviour and how sport helped him to achieve his ambitions.

Speaking following the event, Leon said “It has been great to talk to the young people here tonight and hear about their experiences of anti-social behaviour.

“Programmes like Positive Futures demonstrate the true power of sport and what it can do in bringing young people off the streets by giving them a safe place to learn respect and discipline, whilst exerting a bit of energy.”

PC Kim Meyrick, a Gwent Police Ward Manager in Torfaen, played a key role in organising the event said, “We know anti-social behaviour is a pre-cursor to crime.

“The aim of tonight is to encourage the youths identified as being at risk of entering the criminal justice system to find an alternative route.”

Predominantly funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Positive Futures is a social inclusion programme, which largely uses sport as a tool to engage young people in positive active alternatives.
