Civil parking enforcement powers transfer to local councils

4th July 2019

As of Monday 1 July 2019 civil parking enforcement powers in Gwent have transferred to the five local councils.

This means that local councils are now responsible for enforcing the majority of parking offences on public roads.

The responsibility for enforcing other traffic legislation and for more serious offences, or where it is necessary in the interests of public safety, remains with Gwent Police.

Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner Jeff Cuthbert said: “I am fully supportive of the transfer of parking powers to the local authorities, as dealing with illegal and irresponsible parking was a huge drain on police resources.

“Now there are dedicated resources to tackle this problem and the councils, unlike the police, are able to keep the money raised to reinvest in road and transport improvements.”
