Celebrating the Windrush Generation

26th June 2025

Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd has paid tribute Gwent’s Windrush Generation.

The Windrush Generation refers to the African-Caribbean men, women and children who arrived in the UK on HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. They came at a time of great labour shortages in the UK and were welcomed as part of the country’s efforts to rebuild after WW2.

On Sunday the Commissioner’s team supported an event run by youth arts organisation Urban Circle, honouring the legacy of the Windrush Generation in Newport through a series of short films.

Later this week the Commissioner will also attend a special event at the Senedd, organised by Race Council Cymru and supported by funding from Wales’s four Police and Crime Commissioners, to celebrate the contribution the Windrush Generation has made in Wales.

Jane Mudd said: “Windrush Day is our opportunity to say thank you to those people who left their homes and travelled so far to come and help us rebuild the country after the war. It is now 77 years since HMT Empire Windrush arrived on our shores and it is important that we continue to remember those men and women who went on to contribute so much to our communities.”
