Request for data on reported racist hatecrimes

Thank you for your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Two duties are placed on public authorities under Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). Notwithstanding applicable exemptions, the first duty at, Section 1(1) (a), is to confirm or deny whether the information specified in a request is held. The second duty at, Section1 (1) (b), is to disclose information that has been confirmed as being held. Under the provisions of those sections of the FOIA, we can confirm that the information you seek is not held by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent. Please find response below.

We seek the following information on racist hate crimes towards the following ethnic groups:

- Chinese

- East Asian

- South East Asian

- Asian

- "Oriental"

- Or any that had such appearance (set out above)

(The “Relevant Groups”)

And would like data for the following years, broken down by each month:

- 2019

- 2020

- 2021 (up until the FOI response date or whatever are the most recent statistics).

Request 1: Provide the number of racist hate crimes reported where the victim(s) comprise of the Relevant Groups, broken down by each group where possible.

Request 2: Please if you have such data, could you also provide us with any additional breakdown of where coronavirus was mentioned or where it was the motivator of the racist hate crime.

Please provide the data for my request in an Excel spreadsheet format with suggested row headings by year and month, with column headings:

- Number of incidents

- Ethnicity/ethnic appearance

- Was coronavirus mentioned as part of the crime - Y/N?
