Human Rights

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is required to monitor the compliance of their police force in relation to the duties placed on them by the Human Rights Act 1998.  The Act requires all public authorities to work in a way that is compatible with the individual rights and freedoms set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.  It also provides people with answers if a public authority breaches their human rights.

The main aim for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, as well as Gwent Police, is to ensure that all staff, officers and volunteers understand the realistic effect this has on their central functions and duties.  Our policies set a framework for decision-making and conduct that requires and seeks to ensure human rights compatibility in all areas of our work.

The requirement to monitor human rights is contained within our Strategic Equality Plan.
