Equality Duty

Equality Objectives and Strategic Equality Plan

In October 2010, the Equality Act introduced a Public Sector Equality Duty which requires us, when carrying out our internal and external functions, to have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

The Equality Duty applies to staff of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, and members of our communities who share protected characteristics. 

In March 2012, the first Strategic Equality Plan and Equality Objectives 2012-2016 was published, in line with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duty Regulations) 2011.

The Strategic Equality Plan is based on the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s guidelines provided to devolved public sector bodies in Wales. It draws together information about the organisation, its commitment to equality and other related information that supports the equality objectives.

To help us develop our new objectives and plan, we asked people to complete a short electronic survey as well as running a number of community focus groups in partnership with Gwent Police. On completion of the consultation, we took the comments provided by participants and used them to shape our equality objectives, which have been published with our new Joint Strategic Equality Plan 2016-2020.
